Helmet Standards Explained
Helmet Certifications Explained - Watch the Video!
You should be using a helmet that meets a standard that specifically relates to the type of activity you're participating in.
The different standards test for flat impact, hazard edge impact, a spike drop around impact and crush resistance. And then there's also the Virginia Tech study that was evaluating concussion risk. There are now 5 standards that are testing to different levels for each of those different impact tests. PAS015 2011, EN1384, VG1,
SEI/ASTM and Snell.
We decided to have some fun and do a non-scientific test by running over this helmet with a 2000 pound Yanmar.
We did this with a Charles Owen Halo with MIPS, and if you take a look at that and watch it in slow motion, you can see that this helmet held up incredibly well. You see the brim flexing, and this helmet barely has a scratch on it. We checked the inside as well and not a dent. For comparison, we did this with another helmet that did really well in the Virginia Tech study but only has one certification. And if you look at the shell of this helmet from the inside after we ran it over, it does not look good. That's why the more certifications, the better.
